Nicholas McDonald talks to QX!
QX: How did you find the X Factor experience?
NICHOLAS: The best feeling was when I got through each week, because I didn’t know if I would. It was so hard because people were leaving, and you didn’t want it to be you.
Did you have confidence in yourself?
It was hard to have confidence in yourself and you don’t want to be cocky. Every week you’re just hoping and praying that you get through.
Did you find the competition with other contestants intimidating?
No, the house was like a big, massive family. We all got along so well. The house did start to feel bigger as people left though… If you get through, someone leaves every week. So you just concentrate on your next performance and try not to be distracted by anything else.
How did it feel being in the last two?
I felt so lucky, and I get along so well with Sam, so it didn’t feel like a competition. I was so pleased for her. She’s been singing for twenty years. She’s done the pubs and clubs, a cruise ship and worked in a prison. It was literally her last chance, so I’m so happy for her.
Have you been approached by any labels?
There have been meetings, but nothing has been decided upon 100%. At the moment I just want to spend time with family.
Would you work with Louis?
I don’t know. I’ll just have to wait and see, I suppose.
Gary wasn’t overly supportive of you.
I respect him, but I didn’t let it get to me. I’m not there to please judges. I’m there to please my audience and get as far as I can in the competition. At the end of the day bad comments don’t send you away, if you’re going to go, you’re going to go.
Rough Copy said you’re a lively character in the house and in person, but it didn’t come across so much on stage. Do you feel your character was represented properly on the show?
Not really. I don’t think my full potential came across, but I was going on the show to sing not to show my character. On Xtra Factor I showed my character a lot more, because you weren’t worrying about the performance, do you know what I mean? On the live show you’re always worrying about what is next, what’s coming next and you’ve got someone in your ear constantly telling you stuff, so you’re so occupied with that and don’t think about your character coming across.
What are you planning for your performance at G-A-Y?
I want to show my upbeat side. I didn’t get to show that on the show. I wanna do something from the charts, like a Bruno Mars song.
