After spending some time in Australia, QX popped by to welcome home Dolly Diamond as they prepare for their new Sunday residency of Cabaret and Cocktails at Ku Lounge. Comfortably seated, cocktail in hand, QX’s connoisseur of cabaret, Dietrich Von Weimar, was there to ask the questions.
Tell us about your recent self, Dolly.
I feel like I’ve been performing all my life and I count myself lucky for loving what I do. I wasn’t going to let a global pandemic stop me from doing what I love, so I packed my bags and headed back to the Mother Country.
What have you noticed about the Mother Country, now that you’re back?
It’s so bloody great to be back and I’ve lived over half my life here at one time or another.
People are back to embracing life but I think some people are just exhausted from everything they’ve gone through. It’s my job to make them forget all that and laugh again and really enjoy life, not just accept it.
What will you be doing with your new residency at Ku Bar?
We’re taking over the cocktail lounge and I have the incredible John Thorn on keyboards, he’s a master on that thing.
I had “Dolly Diamond’s Piano Bar” running in Melbourne for the last 5 years and it’s about joining in and not giving a crap about how great your voice might be, I’ve got away with it for the last 20+ years.
What pearl of wisdom can you share with our family of readers?
My motto is “Never let the bastards get you down” and I stick by that. We’ve all tried to do our best with everything we’ve had to deal with over the last 2 years and I’m ready to cut loose and enjoy every moment I can remember the next day.
