XNTHONY on Lockdown & St Patrick’s Day X-Travaganza, Clapham Grand

Sodom and Begorrah at The Clapham Grand

Back in 2020 Jason Reid caught up with with fellow proud queer Irish-person, award-winning cabaret artist and theatre-maker Xnthony, to chat about their night Sodom and Begorrah, modern day Ireland and more. The show was scheduled for 14th March 2020. Yep, you guessed it, COVID 19 struck and there was lockdown. Now over a year later, QX has caught up with Xnthony, ahead of the rescheduled show at THE CLAPHAM GRAND.

QX asked some very different questions as an update to that first B.C. (Before COVID) interview …

Hi Xnthony, it’s nice to see you back. It’s been a year since QX spoke with you, and what a year! Would you like to tell us how it’s been for you?

The week before lock down I was gearing up to start development on my new very bloody, disco-musical (that’s a thing!) about England’s Daddy of Democracy Oliver Cromwell (also known as a total prick in Ireland). Of course, lockdown put a stop to that, but it did mean I had a year to write, which in normal circumstances never happens. Blessing in disguise! It also meant we had to cancel our 2020 Sodom & Begorrah St Patrick’s Day show, but two Patrick’s Days on we’re back and we’re going twice as hard to make up for lost time!

Once lockdown started I pretty much immediately came offline, deleted my socials, took off my makeup and spent the year focusing on surviving. I sometimes wonder if I magicked up Covid-19 (I didn’t, I swear…) because I didn’t realise how much I was in need of a break. Artists are always at the forefront of things, blazing trails and breaking down barriers but during a pandemic…I thought…God, I just want to survive, have tea with my Ma and fall asleep to the Angelus!

Once I had my second prick (finally a prick that’s good for me) I was back in action; dreaming and scheming with a new found understanding of what I stand for and what I want audiences to experience. Sodom & Begorrah will be my first show in 18 months and while I’m absolutely bricking it, it feels loaded with the same excitement I felt when I started out and everything was laden with risk!

How has your world changed?

I feel both changed immeasurably but also the absolute-bloody-same. One of the benefits of this ‘new world’ is my increased awareness of the need to support artists and make things as accessible to artists and audiences as possible. Alot of organisations screwed over their artists during the first lockdown in favour of lining their own pockets; but not any more honey! I’m on a new found conquest to equalise the terms for artists and organisations alike. What’s more, the line up for Sodom & Begorrah is the most dynamic and diverse yet and reflects an ever growing importance of inclusivity. Irishness is international. We are literally everywhere. Behind bushes. Under your bed. Serving you a shitty pint of Guinness in your Wetherspoons, just to get back at you for 400 years of colonisation. I love it.

The Grand has had a refurb.

Yes, the Grand has had a refurb and it is looking FIERCE! I love the team at The Grand. They are so fun and supportive. And they’re very sexy? We are really taking full advantage of the gorjeos space with unreal acts like aerial star (and current face of Samsung) Zaki Musa and of course I’ll be presenting a snippet from my new musical ‘Oliver Cromwell is Really Very Sorry’. The whole event will be a poppy, gaggy and green extravaganza you won’t want to miss. Also pints. There will be pints!

We’ve included some of the original interview by Jason Reid in 2020 and relating to the show, but to read the full original interview click here.

Tell us about the origin of Xnthony and your background.

My stage name is Xnthony, and it was inspired by Xtina, XTube, YouTube, porn, and alter-ego nonsense like that. Im originally from Roscommon in Ireland, which was the only county in Ireland that voted no in the marriage equality referendum. I started out about 10 years ago making performance art pieces with ice cream, half naked in dingy Irish pubs. Then Panti Bliss spotted it and put it online, and then I was officially a performance artist. Since then ive grown into a club/theatre-maker that does large-scale theatre pieces about things like Oliver Cromwell and Eurovision.

Tell us about Sodom and Begorrah and what to expect.

Its a massive celebration of the best things that are Irish: storytelling, singing, music. Within that we bring in drag, Irish dancing, an accordion player, tea leaf reading. Were trying to make a space that feels really inclusive and safe and fun for everyone. Well even let Protestants in.

SODOM & BEGORRAH!

A stupendous St Patrick’s Day party

11th JUNE!

To make up for lost time we’re going twice as hard. The whole event will be framed
as a Catholic-mass-cum-club-night hosted by award-winning Irish nightlife
visionary Xnthony and his sensational queer Irish performance collective –
geniusly known as SODOM & BEGORRAH!

Sodom & Begorrah are a huge hit on the festival circuit (remember those?) With
Irish musicians including Mark T Cox and ‘Bitches With Wolves’ providing
gaellic pop bangers. There’ll be celtic cabaret on the Clapham Grand’s iconic
stage from Harriet Braine and Eva O’Connor, as well as special drag
performances from Shay Shay, plus very special guest: Bimini’s housemate
Barbs – get ready to leprechaun FOR YOUR LIFE!

Singaporean aerial artist Zaki Musa is also joining the fun, keeping the true Irish
spirit alive of inclusivity, warmth and drinking until you spin.
Audiences can expect Irish Eurovision remakes, big routines to modern Irish
classics by the likes of Roisin Murphy and Samantha Mumba. There will be
surprise appearances from Oliver Cromwell, a dodgy drag tribute to B-Witched, a
community hall raffle, socially-distanced snogging, and lots of not-so-virgin Marys
getting back into the habit.
