Our roundup of this Easter’s best cabaret
Happy Easter, dears! What does this huge Spring holiday mean to you? Maybe it’s an excuse to relentlessly nosh on Easter Eggs? Or celebrate your man, Jesus? OR a time to just party ALL weekend?
For us, it’s about checking out the best drag and cabaret events London has to offer. This week, Jason Reid shares his pick of the crop for Easter 2019…
Easter Thursday
Crayola’s Madhouse: Hot Box, at The Glory
Starting Easter off on the right heel, with the Queen of Colour. This is a special (almost) 4/20 edition of Madhouse with performances from Krishna Istha, Anita Piss, Tanja McKenzie, Miss Di Jour, Boudica and more. So roll a fat one and turn Maundy Thursday into Magnificent Thursday.
281 Kingsland Road, London E2 8AS.
London Overground: Haggerston.
Good Friday
Pandora Boxx at the RVT
Star of RuPaul’s Drag Race (Season 2) and All Stars (Season 1), Pandora Boxx is one of the first breakout stars of the hit TV show, and this performance at the RVT is a UK first. Tickets are selling fast for this one – my sources tell me – so don’t delay if you’re a fan.
372 Kennington Lane, London SE11 5HY.
London Underground: Vauxhall.
Easter Saturday
Dave Lynn’s Bonnet Party at The Old Ship
The Old Ship is a gorgeous and charming old east-end boozer, and the guv’nor is a true gent. I really can’t recommend the place enough. On Easter Saturday, drag icon Dave Lynn will be hosting a special bonnet party and there’s bound to loads of song and laughter throughout the night. If you can’t get down for this, do pencil in a future visit – this part of London has seen so much gentrification over the past few years and amongst all the bougie bars The Old Ship still stands proud. We should all be supporting places like this.
17 Barnes Street, London E14 7NW.
DLR: Limehouse.
Easter Sunday
Pride’s Got Talent at Phoenix Arts Club
HRH Michael Twaits hosts the first of the Pride’s Got Talent cabaret semis, from 5pm, at the glorious Phoenix. If you’re not leaving London for a provincial Easter then this will be a nice and leisurely way to begin the Easter Sunday merriment. The event is free entry and the venue is very friendly and welcoming to all, and this inclusive competition always showcases a veritable cornucopia of cabaret talent
1 Phoenix Street, London WC2H 8BU.
London Underground: Leicester Square.
Sandra at Halfway to Heaven
Just a hop, skip and a stagger from The Phoenix. Well… a five minute power-mince. HEAR HER NOW; the shy and demure, world champion cock-sucker (1997) Sandra will be singing her way through the evening and telling ALL the filthiest jokes, from around 8pm. Probably not one to bring you nan to. Or maybe it is? Take a gamble…
7 Duncannon Street, London WC2N 4JF.
London Underground: Charing Cross.
Easter Monday
Bank Holiday Monday Pride Fundraiser at the Two Brewers
If your liver holds out till Monday, nip into the Brewers for this marathon of drag – it’s all in aid of Pride in London and hosted by Birmingham’s finest, Miss Penny. Plus there’ll be turns from drag superstar Danny Beard, Miss Jason, Rose Garden, Tanya Hyde, Poppycock and LOADS more.
114 Clapham High Street, London SW4 7UJ.
London Underground: Clapham Common.
