Cruising and public sex have been a part of the gay scene’s DNA for centuries. When society drew a line in the sand when it came to same-sex fornication, men had to become creative about finding somewhere to get down and dirty. What these didn’t quite expect was for our sex and public places to have a detrimental effect on the environment. Public gay sex is now posing a threat to one of the prettiest beaches out there.
The little idyllic beach of Es Cavallet in Ibiza is known worldwide for being a nudist beach with a relaxed attitude, with a major gay-friendly draw. The sprawling beach has a popular gay section new the exclusively gay bar and restaurant Chiringay. The dunes behind the beach offer up just enough privacy for tourists to have a little romp in the sand every now and then. It has developed to be a well known-cruising spot, but all that is about to change.
Biologists and geologists are asking visitors to refrain from getting down and dirty on the dunes as it is causing massive damage to the island’s protected plant species. Scientists have launched a campaign urging couples not to get carried away on the dunes because aggressive sex sessions uproot fragile plants that support these iconic dunes.
Biologist Joan Carles Palerm told Diario de Mallorca, a local paper that:
“Free access like this is causing the break-up of the dunes and their structures. The system that maintains them is very complex and any alteration, such as this continuous activity, fatally affects them.”
In response, authorities have built a fence enclosing the problem areas, but impassioned lovers have been reportedly jumping the barrier and continuing on with their… activities. Though public nudity is legal under Spanish jurisdiction, having sex in public places is not and usually results in a harsh fine.
It seems these gays are not so easily deterred.
