You & I is a joint German/Polish venture from director Nils Bokamp and actors Eric Klotzsch and George Taylor. It’s a dreamily engaging gay road movie, evocatively focused on sun, summer and sex.
It’s the story of a straight photographer, Jonas and his gay best friend Philip. Jonas is broody and withdrawn, while Philip is giggly and likes running around with no pants on. Well we can all see where THIS is going.
You & I is a little different from your average straight-to-DVD gay smutfest though. It’s got much more heart and sole, and is often sensorily accurate when it comes to emotion, sex and the joys of travel. The boys’ friendship is tested when they’re joined by a third, a hitchhiker with designs on Philip, which stirs unexpected jealousy in Jonas.
All three performances from the unknown young actors are more than promising, and apart from anything else they’re all gorgeous and effortlessly charming.
It was released in 2013 in Germany, and is enjoying international release this year. It gives a decent portrayal of something that’s becoming a welcome complication amongst younger generations as prejudice becomes a thing of the past – the increasingly blurred lines between bromance and romance.
